Air Quality Alert for Kahnawà:ke Due to Wildfire Smoke
Kahnawà:ke, Ohiarí:ha / June 6, 2025 - The community is advised that air quality conditions in Kahnawà:ke and the Greater Montréal region have significantly deteriorated due to smoke from ongoing wildfires in Western Canada. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement, with today’s Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) reaching level 8, categorized as high risk.
Wildfire smoke contains fine particles that can be harmful when inhaled. Individuals most at risk include seniors, young children, pregnant individuals, people with chronic heart or lung conditions, and those who work outdoors. Even healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation, coughing, or headaches. More serious symptoms like chest pain, wheezing, or difficulty breathing require immediate medical attention.
Precautionary Measures
- Limit time spent outdoors, especially for children, elders, and those with health conditions
- Keep windows and doors closed to maintain indoor air quality
- Use certified air purifiers or high-efficiency filters if available
- If outdoor activity is necessary, consider wearing a properly fitted N95, KN95, or KF94 mask -Stay hydrated and monitor for symptoms
- Check in on vulnerable community members, including elders and neighbors living alone
Community members are encouraged to follow public health guidance and take steps to reduce exposure during this period. KSCS will continue monitoring the situation and will provide updates if conditions change.
