KSCS Opens Turtle Bay Elders Lodge as Cooling Shelter During Extreme Heat

(Kahnawà:ke – 30 Ohiarí:ha/June 30 2026)

In response to the extreme heat affecting the region, Kahnawà:ke Shakotiia'takehnhas Community Services (KSCS) is opening the Turtle Bay Elders Lodge as a cooling shelter for community members seeking relief from the high temperatures.

The cooling shelter will be available beginning Tuesday, June 30, and will remain open through Friday, July 3, while the current heat event continues. Community members are encouraged to make use of the air-conditioned space to stay cool and reduce the risk of heat-related illness.

The cooling shelter will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Community members are welcome to stop by during operating hours. We are open 24/7 with security. If possible, please call the Turtle Bay Elders Lodge in advance at 450-632-5499 to let staff know you will be coming so staff can anticipate your arrival.

If there is a power outage or a community member requires overnight accommodation due to the extreme heat, arrangements can be made to allow them to remain at the Turtle Bay Elders Lodge overnight. Community members requiring this support are encouraged to contact the Turtle Bay Elders Lodge at 450-632-5499.

Cooling Shelter Location: Turtle Bay Elders Lodge

Dates: Tuesday, June 30 to Friday, July 3, 2026

KSCS encourages everyone to take precautions during periods of extreme heat by staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, checking in on family members, friends, and neighbours, especially elders and those with underlying health conditions, and seeking air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.

Any updates regarding the cooling shelter will be shared through KSCS' official communication channels.
