Mental Wellness and Addictions is dedicated to supporting community members on their journey to healing and improving their wellbeing. We are located at the Family Services Building.

About Us

Our multidisciplinary team is comprised of Addictions Response Services, Shakotisnien:nens (counsellors), and Psychological Services and provides a range of services including individual counselling, psychotherapy, group programs, and innovative approaches like zootherapy and play therapy. 

Through culturally informed, trauma-sensitive care, we help individuals navigate challenges related to addiction, trauma, and mental health concerns. We provide Kahnawa’kehró:non with comprehensive support through our multidisciplinary team, collaboration with external service providers, culturally relevant groups and individual interventions. By integrating traditional values and holistic practices, our team ensures compassionate, timely support that aligns with the individuals unique needs. 

What We Offer

Mental Wellness and Addictions offers a range of services and programs designed to support individuals facing mental health challenges, trauma, and or substance use concerns. Our approach fosters connection, resilience and empowerment, helping you navigate your life with the support you deserve. We also support clients referred by the judicial system, addressing their unique needs with care and expertise.

Cultural and Land-based Programs

Our program allows community members to improve their mental wellness by restoring their balance, reconnecting with culture, and learning about traditional wellness practices. Through traditional teachings and land-based healing, the program provides a path to inner peace, and improved well-being.

Individual counselling 

Our team of experienced counsellors provide one on one support in a safe confidential environment. Whether you’re experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, grief, self-esteem issues, or substance use challenges, we are here to help. 

We utilize various approaches tailored to the unique needs of our community. These include: 

  • Supportive counselling
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Cultural teachings
  • Land-based healing activities
  • Specialized therapies (zootherapy, play therapy)

Group programs

Various programs exist to support the diverse needs of the community. Our programs create a sense of community, belonging and support by bringing people together who share similar experiences.

Programs include:

  • Restoring Hope: Providing guidance, resources, and a supportive network for families navigating the challenges of loved ones' substance misuse. 

  • Roti'nikonhkatste' (They have strong will) Wellness Group: A space for men to strengthen mental wellness.

  • Red Road Recovery: A talking circle offering safe space and support for those on the path to recovery. 

  • Good Company: Social gatherings for elders to spark meaningful conversation and break isolation. 

Crisis Intervention & Support

If you are experiencing acute distress, we are here to provide immediate support and assistance. We have a triage system in place for urgent cases, we provide short-term crisis counselling and provide check-ins for individuals on waitlists.

Addictions Response Services

We provide compassionate support, resources and guidance for Kahnawa’kehró:non facing substance use and addiction challenges. More information is available on our Addictions Response Services page.

Critical Incident Debriefing

Our team of highly qualified staff provide critical incident debriefings for first responders, and witnesses to traumatic events. We understand the immense challenges faced by individuals exposed to traumatic and high-stress situations. Our debriefing session gives them a safe space, to process their experience, navigate the psychological impact of the incident, and promote wellbeing.

Referral Services

We assist community members in accessing additional services to ensure they receive comprehensive care tailored to their specific needs and circumstances.

Support for Specialized Concerns

Our team is qualified to support more specialized concerns including the following: 

  • Disordered eating
  • Sex & love addiction
  • Gambling addiction
  • Friends and family support for addiction

Community Campaigns and Events

Beyond the support we provide through counselling services and related programming, our team frequently helps organize annual events to raise awareness, foster healing and bring the community together. This includes:

  • Veterans Breakfast to commemorate, honour and show appreciation to those who have served. It reminds local veterans their time served is invaluable and provides a sense of healing and appreciation.
  • Walk Towards Recovery gives a platform to Kahnawa’kehró:non who’ve struggled with drugs or alcohol the opportunity to come together a celebrate sobriety and remind them that they are supported and have access to a safe space and resources.

Collaboration and Support

Everyone deserves access to mental health support and should never have to struggle alone. Our team is committed to guiding clients in the right direction by working collaboratively with internal departments and external partners. 

We maintain strong connections with intake, youth protection, prevention, and traditional services, to ensure a comprehensive network of care. Through collaboration and combining our diverse expertise, we can meet the community’s changing needs with compassion, respect and innovation.
