Prevention Services serves as a cornerstone for promoting mental health, preventing substance abuse, and addressing family violence within the community. Our team is based at The White House.

About Us

Our program operates with a trauma-informed approach and is deeply rooted in the belief that prevention is the most effective tool for fostering resilience and improving the overall well-being of Kahnawa’kehró:non.

By offering a wide range of proactive and culturally relevant services, we aim to empower individuals, families, and groups to make informed choices for a healthier future. Our approach emphasizes community engagement, education, and collaboration to ensure we meet the evolving needs of our people.

Prevention Services aligns its initiatives with the Community Wellness Plan, using its objectives and research as a foundation for our work. This allows us to provide services that span all life stages, from prenatal care to elder support. Our team continuously anticipates emerging challenges, utilizing trend forecasting and innovative strategies to proactively address issues before they arise. By staying ahead of evolving needs, we ensure that our preventative efforts remain effective, responsive, and forward-thinking, creating a foundation for lasting positive change.

What We Offer

Prevention Services provides a comprehensive array of programs and initiatives designed to address various social and health-related challenges.

School-Based Prevention Lessons

We engage students of all ages through interactive and age-appropriate prevention lessons that address topics such as mental health, substance use, bullying, and self-esteem. In addition to classroom-based activities, we aim to work alongside parents, providing complementary information and resources to foster a unified approach to prevention. Schools and community organizations can also request workshops or presentations tailored to their specific needs.

Community Campaigns

Prevention Services leads the development of awareness campaigns that tackle pressing social issues impacting the community, such as mental health, substance abuse and violence. These campaigns are designed to educate, provide resources, spark dialogue, and inspire action among community members.

Harm Reduction Initiatives

Our harm reduction strategies aim to reduce the risks associated with substance use and mental health challenges. We offer practical resources, information, and tools to promote safer behaviours while respecting individual choices. As part of our commitment to harm reduction, we also provide the Server Responsibility Training Initiative, equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to serve alcohol responsibly and minimize potential risks within the community.

Suicide Intervention and Mental Health Training

Equipping the community with the knowledge and skills to respond to mental health crises is a key focus of our work. We deliver evidence-based training programs such as Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and safeTALK, ensuring participants are well-prepared to offer support.

Addressing Family Violence

Creating a sense of safety and security is paramount. We provide specialized support for youth and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals, creating safe spaces where they can access resources, find acceptance, and build confidence.

Workshops and Parenting Programs

To meet the diverse needs of families, we offer workshops and parenting programs that address topics such as effective communication, healthy relationships, and coping strategies. These sessions are available as needed and can be tailored to specific group requirements.

Collaboration and Support

Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. Prevention Services actively builds partnerships with a wide range of community stakeholders to maximize the reach and impact of our initiatives. Our collaborative efforts include:

  • Working with local schools, community organizations, and the Kahnawà:ke Youth Centre to support programs like Teen Zone. Collaborating with their general programming when needed, ensuring a safe and engaging space for adolescents.
  • Collaborating with allied service providers, including the KSCS continuum of Child and Family Services, to create a seamless network of support for community members. Additionally, working alongside external providers to expand the range of services available, ensuring comprehensive support for individuals and families
  • Coordinating with community leadership and organizations to align prevention efforts with broader health and wellness goals.
  • Engaging with the community at large to co-create solutions and initiatives, ensuring that all voices are heard and represented.

By fostering strong relationships with partners, we avoid working in silos and create a unified, community-driven approach to prevention.

Commitment to the Community

At the forefront of our work, we always ensure that Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten—our ways—are woven into everything we do. Prevention Services is dedicated to fostering a healthier, safer, and more resilient community. Our commitment extends beyond the delivery of programs - we strive to empower individuals and families to take charge of their well-being through education, resources, and ongoing support.

We understand that prevention is a shared responsibility, and we are proud to collaborate with community members, leaders, and partners to build a culture of awareness and proactive care. By addressing root causes and providing the tools needed for informed decision-making, we aim to create an environment where everyone feels supported and connected.

Whether through our campaigns, training programs, or direct services, our ultimate goal is to improve the overall quality of life for all Kahnawa’kehró:non.
